I ate like I hadn’t in days. They watched me the whole time. Not hostile. Not welcoming. Just… watchful. When the bowl was empty, the gray-bearded man, Eldric, he said his name was, sat across from me. “Now,” he said. “Tell us how a human woman with no scent of pack ends up in our woods after a raid, reeking of alpha blood.” I told them—most of it. The forest. The battle. The wounded man. The cave. I left out the part where I’d written this world into existence. That felt too insane, even for me.

She could hear the sound of leaves crunching underfoot as the man led her down a narrow path. Finally, they arrived at a small clearing in the center of the woods. The man gestured for Emma to sit on a fallen log, and she did so hesitantly. "So, what can you tell me?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. The man regarded her for a moment before speaking. "I've lived in these woods my whole life," he said. "I know them like the back of my hand. And I've seen things that most people wouldn't believe."

"We’re getting somewhere. Where did you meet this 'someone'?" "In the Northern lands," the man gasped. "In the woods closest to the human settlements." Valen went white. He literally blanched, his grip on the man’s hair slackening for a fraction of a second. "The Hollow Woods?" he muttered, his voice shaking. "Yes! Yes, that one!" the man cried, eager to save himself. Valen dropped the man’s hair as if it had turned into fire. He stood up, his eyes glazed and distant. "Maddox!"

I held my tongue as we both knew the answer and we continued to walk into the woods with him stopping several times to stand face to face with the trees and bent down to pick the sand just around the tree to feel it up or something as I had no idea what he was doing. We continued to walk further as the trees became thicker and the silence swallowed us whole. “Now this is her heart” he muttered to himself as he brought out something from his pocket and wrote something on the tree. True fear coursed through my body at the thought of what the man could do to me in a succluded area.
