“Elise,” she said softly. “Elise Th—” She caught herself. “Just Elise.”
“Just Elise,” the Warden echoed, testing it on her tongue. “And what would you give in exchange for this… sanctuary you seek?”
Elise hesitated. “Whatever I can offer. I’ll work, serve, do anything. I’m not a threat.”
The Warden stepped closer, her presence commanding but not cruel. Up close, Elise could see faint symbols tattooed along her neck — ancient runes that pulsed faintly when the moonlight touched them.
