He straightens up, as all signs of amusement snap from his face in a split second and holds still while she goes to work on the chain in his hands. She places both of her hands a few inches above the metal and whispers some incantation until a low blue glow can be seen from underneath her palms. When the glow fades she moves her warm copper brown hands and sighs.

Anna remained perched on the stone altar, the white shroud clinging to her skin, but her gaze was fixed on the space between the boiling iron pot and the old woman. Standing there was a shadow that didn't belong to the dead or the living. It was a young woman, translucent and radiant, her hair the color of midnight and her eyes the same electric blue that had defined Anna’s life. She looked so much like Elara, but the age was wrong,she was a snapshot of a girl who had never been allowed to grow old. Another screamed as darkness wrapped around his throat. The third tried to run. Aria caught him by the collar with strength she shouldn’t have, slamming him into the pavement. Her eyes glowed faint silver for a second.

This was our only way forward. Minseok moved first, his movements fluid and precise as he slashed at the creeping shadows. They recoiled with a hiss, retreating momentarily before surging forward again, more aggressive than before.
