Damien exhaled slowly, running a hand through his hair before leaning forward, his elbows resting on his knees as he looked at her more directly.
His voice lowered slightly, carrying something heavier now.
“It’s all my fault. I thought I could handle everything by keeping you here with me. I thought being safe was all you needed.”
He shook his head once, frustration flickering briefly through his expression. “But I didn’t realize how badly it was affecting your emotions. And today….” He paused as his voice trailed off, “Today, I realized I couldn’t even keep you safe.”
