“Let’s keep this energy going!” Someone else was dragged into the circle. The sound of feet scuffing the ground snapped me back to the moment. A fist flew. A grunt. A cry. Someone slammed into the border and turned to ash before they could even scream. Another gone. Just like that. People were dying faster than I could breathe. It felt like hours but eventually, after too many lives faded into ash, the Game Master cleared his throat dramatically and clapped his hands once. “And that,” he announced, voice brimming with satisfaction, “concludes the Game for today! Players, please step forward for final count.”

It’s getting weaker by the second, and as soon as it is gone, the entire pack will be washed off the face of the planet.” A heaviness settled on my chest as my body was hit with the sudden grief of losing my uncle, even though he wasn’t gone yet.
