A man hit by a car in New York in 1977 got up uninjured, but lay back down in front of the car when a bystander told him to pretend he was hurt so he could collect the insurance money. The car then rolled forward and crushed him I don't own any of this stories. I found them in some creepy books. I'm thinking of writing my own scary stories, but not anytime soon. He grinned, wiggling his fingers mysteriously. “It’s called ‘Story Fingers.’ You take turns telling a story, but here’s the catch—you can only speak one sentence at a time, and you have to include a finger count with each sentence. For example, I start with ‘One fox ran across the river,’ and then you continue with two of something happening, and so on. It gets tricky, and hilarious, especially after a few rounds.” Jaiyana laughed, already intrigued. “Sounds… complicated. But fun. Okay, I’m in.”

Debra crossed her arms. Andrew's smile didn't falter. "Once upon a time, there was a shepherd boy. He was bored while watching his sheep, so he decided to play a prank. He shouted, 'Wolf! Wolf!' The villagers dropped everything and rushed to help, only to find out the boy had lied. The second time, he played the same trick, and again, the villagers came running. This time, they were furious to be deceived. Finally, a real wolf came. The boy cried for help, louder than ever, but no one came. He and his sheep were left to the wolf."

"See? We're a town of silly jokes and serious secrets. It's a delicate balance." The conversation flowed, a blend of playful banter and cryptic hints. Aurora learned about the annual "Glimmering Night of a Thousand Lanterns," a tradition shrouded in ancient folklore, the legend of the mischievous sprites that inhabited the old mill, and the unsolved mystery of the disappearing scarecrows. Each tale was more peculiar than the last, painting a vivid picture of a town steeped in both the mundane and the magical.

A childhood visual of the old witch from the library Hansel and Gretel book pops into my head and only increases the giggles I exude. “I hope not, I’m barely grown, and she might add me to tonight’s menu. I’m too big for an oven!” I point out between snorts of stupid laughter and Meadow caves and starts giggling too, lightening our whole mood. I guess the tension and the heavy weight of this journey has us strung out enough, that even a lame joke like this has enough power to break the strings and have us erupt. It’s needed, between us, this bonding over awful jokes.

He said this to me while stuttering and sweating profusely on his palm. I paused for a moment before smiling because I suddenly remembered an old joke. "What makes fowl so amusing?" Arthur arched his brow and couldn't come up with an answer. I cleared my throat and imitated how fowls make noise. "Becauseeeeee!!" I declared, making both of us laugh out loud.

When he did, he felt Roy gradually relaxing against him as well, his back curving naturally to his chest. “Tell me the joke,” he murmured into his ears. His voice was hesitant when he said, “Are you sure?” “Yes.” He cleared his throat. “So, there were three guys stranded on an island. Jack, Jim, and John.” A smirk pulled the corners of his lips, without him opening his eyes. The women he’d been forced to be with would never make a joke like this. It would be something else, something witty, mocking even, and most importantly, sophisticated. Or naughty—anything to impress him.

Rehana had already passed out while Rudra was talking. Rudra and Anu shared some of their high school stories, most of them were embarrassing. Ana turned all red when Rudra told us how she went strip poking in front her landlady when she was drunk. I had to bite my lips to the point they bled, to stifle my laughter. "That must be quite a show." I added while chuckling. "Oh, Shut up, not you too." My wife groaned beside me. "Actually it's fine you can do that again if you want, just make sure I am in the audience. The only audience to be more precise."

The naughty boys back in their youth won’t dare crack a joke at her expense. Tess noticed his telling smile and asked what could be so funny that he couldn’t contain his grin. Hugh welcomely took her question, responding by letting it out and turning his smile into a laugh. Then he threw the punchline he’d been damn wanting to release. “They must be calling you ‘Lord of the Jungle Greens’.” While trying to keep the seriousness in her face upon entering the room, the punchline caused her to give in to the sudden lightness of the mood in the room. She acknowledged, “That’s not a bad joke, Hugh. You have sharpened your sense of humor I guess.”

Vera deadpanned, then smiled when he laughed, really laughed, the kind that lit up his whole face and crinkled the corners of his eyes. She liked that sound more than she cared to admit. They fell into an easy rhythm after that. Nothing serious, nothing heavy, just snippets of stories, childhood mischiefs, and mutual teasing that felt like balm after everything that had happened. He told her about sneaking out of his boarding school with his friend and getting caught three blocks away because his friend had a weak bladder and needed to pee every twenty minutes.
