Grace squealed in delight as she latched onto my leg, or at least to the best a four year old can latch onto a calf as thick as mine. I sighed, smiling as I looked down at my niece, with her dark locks and purple streaks indicating her status as a hybrid. She may not be my niece by blood, but her arrival in my sister’s life saved her from a depression that Stephen and I couldn’t pull her back from. Grace is a bright light for our family. When she smiles at me, I feel the burden of my sins lifted. Almost. “Do you?” I asked as I leaned down and lifted her. “Or do I have you?”

I hadn’t thought about how safe I’d been at Matt’s side during the party and how much danger she’d been in just walking the crowd or sitting somewhere alone. She hadn’t gone far, but it was far enough. My stomach turned and knotted as I met her gaze. She had given me a way in and a way out without insulting my pride. There was nothing malevolent in her words. I smiled at her, gratefully, “I’ll be fine… Though I could use some pointers.” Grace grinned at me, “Of course.” Matt sighed and nodded as the door opened and the woman came out with a dress that was the same color as Grace’s skin, just a little warmer than a standard nude. I don’t know what she’s doing, but she seems to, and I trust her to figure it out. I bow my head, like she is, and concentrate. I feel the blow of power as it erupts from Grace. I feel Lily as she spins around the front of Grace grabbing my other hand, pulling from my strength and pushing it into Grace. “Hold on, Grace.” Lily whispers as Grace screams. When Grace falls to the ground, Lily pulls us with her, continuing to give her whatever strength we can. When I look up, I realize that Grace has saved everyone. Everyone that was dead or dying on the field is waking up, as if they were merely unconscious.

After quickly restraining the boy, Derek swiftly knocked him unconscious, then called for someone to take him away to bandage his wound. As the door slammed shut, Derek positioned himself silently by Salvador's side. Meanwhile, Grace and Lyra remained kneeling on the floor. Grace knelt upright, her back straight as realization sank in—she had lost. There was no turning back now. She had failed to secure what she so desperately desired. And with that failure, she knew that nothing could save her now. Her anger and frustration were meaningless in the face of what was to come. Salvador's rage exploded as he drove his foot into her stomach, roaring, "Vile woman! How cruel you are!"

*Grace* I stood by the window of my living room, staring out into the darkened streets below as I grappled with my emotions. My heart swelled with hope and happiness after Sarah's unexpected acceptance of my relationship with David, yet Margaret's chilling threats overshadowed my newfound joy. The red shirt underneath feels like a deliberate choice, the vibrant color bold against the dark suit, and it reminds me of the blood that will soon be spilled, that will stain my hands before the night is over. “Welcome Mr…” he begins, stretching his hand to me. An unwise decision, I think, as I glance at his extended hand- a gesture to show trust, to form a connection.
