I feel I'm hearing myself say the same thing, but I feel it’s something that happens anew each time I hear it. My concentration breaks with a snap and I tumble into my body. When the first wave of confusion and shock settles, an ecstatic grin spreads on my face. “The thought is the wall. I can’t build a mental wall out of nothing, thoughts are actually a form of energy, so I need to use the energy I generate to make a wall to keep the other thoughts in.” My voice comes out light and happy and it’s like I just made the biggest discovery of my life, until doubt sets in and I frown.

Were the 3 kids in front of me, not Darlings? I tried to ignore them as they left for the yard. I took a deep breath and focused. This was my angel side. It was warm and calming. I opened my eyes to see a ball of light in my hand. It was dim, but it was warm, and bright enough to see the room.

“Grandpa Elias wrote that knowledge is a light meant to be shared, right? If we keep it all to ourselves, it doesn’t shine as bright.” Everyone laughed softly, pleased that the lessons were taking root. Liam knelt beside his son. “That is exactly right. We have our observatory, our telescopes, our work—but none of it means much if it only helps a few. The more people we can inspire, teach, and give hope to, the stronger our light becomes.”

The January light through the kitchen windows — thin, pale, the quality of light that knew it was the middle of winter, the quality of light that promised nothing and delivered exactly what it promised, which was enough light to see by and not enough light to forget that the sun was still low and the days were still short. Ernest thought: the light is also a teacher. The winter light teaches you to see with what is available rather than with what you wish were available. The January light teaches you that enough is enough — that you do not need the full summer abundance to see clearly, that sometimes the stripped-down version shows you more than the abundant version could show.

Her thoughts are my thoughts, I kept reminding myself. Her thoughts are all mine… I had the same thoughts. I was her thoughts. We were connected. She swallowed the lump in her throat and I imagined that she was nervous about something; I couldn’t blame her. I was trying to tap into her mind, I was nervous too. “You need to free yourself of your own thoughts,” King Bennet warned, sensing that I was thinking too much. “Remember, her thoughts are your thoughts. Imagine that your minds are connected.”

I chuckled and his eyes widened, "what?" "Maybe not to the same extent, since we don't have claws or anything. But to me, humans are like blank sheets of paper. We're not inherently evil or good; it all depends on our upbringing. But even though we are taught to be kind and friendly, we all have dark and selfish thoughts in the back of our minds. Even if we never do it, those thoughts are still there." I explained it to him so he could understand. "Really?" he said and I nodded.

We watched the sun sink slowly beyond the horizon. As I watched the last sliver of sunlight disappear, I suddenly felt a wave of relief wash over me. After all, a brand-new chapter of my life was just beginning. The End.

You do be surprised at how shallow their thinking is,” I said, and he chuckled. “You have chosen to focus on the negative part of people. If you focus on the bright side, people are empathetic, adorable, and find everything new, amazing and pretty. People are beautiful when they laugh and beautiful when they spend time with family. Their creativity, their innovation and their intelligence are beautiful and amazing. Why should I focus on the negative part when there are so many beautiful parts?” he asked, and I kept quiet.
