I stabbed over my head, dragging the blade with me towards its rear with a spill of silk.
Its belly exploded in scurrying baby spiders, each the size of a housecat.
The newly birthed young devoured their mother from the inside out, her screams shrill and lengthy. I ran up onto her fallen corpse, the hard shell of her carapace shattering under my heels, and leapt free, seizing upon a strand of thread that was suspended from a tree. The baby spiders surged up the trunk and I tied the thread around my waist so that I dangled over the massacre, as they pursued me.
