Her hands shook violently. Another message followed. Visibility attracts consequences. Maya slid down the wall, sitting on the cold floor, her breath coming in shallow gasps. They were escalating. And Ethan didn’t know how close to the edge she was standing. Across the room, Ethan felt it the shift.

It didn’t matter in the face of death. My head jerked to the right, founding the blade glistening. Looking at him, my hand reached for the blade.
