For a moment there’s only ringing, the same specific silence that follows an explosion in an enclosed space, and then the sounds of the world flood back in, shouting, someone coughing hard, the crackle of fire settling into the wreckage.
David lies there for a second longer than necessary before he pushes himself up, staring at the collapsed entrance and then at what’s left of the two men who didn’t make it out.
