But his eyes were fixed on the woman on the hill with a lethal intensity. "That's not Selene, Kaima," Rowan said, his voice a low warning. "That's the Void wearing her face. Look at her eyes." I looked. Her eyes were no longer violet. They were hollow pits of blackness, with tiny, swirling galaxies of red light at the center. She didn't look at me with love or even with the sadness of our past. She looked at me with the cold, hungry gaze of a storm.

I reached down and picked up a shard of broken glass from the floor. Holding it up, I angled it toward my reflection. For a split second, I didn’t understand what I was seeing. Then I did. There was no white. No iris. No pupil. Just black. Endless black. Like the night sky without stars. Like the abyss itself had settled inside my skull. The Void had answered.

"You think a girl from the Peaks can match the strength of the West? Without your magic you’re meat." He raised the mallet for a killing blow. I looked at my arm—the one infected by the Void-ink. It was numb, cold as a glacier.. As I looked at the black veins I realized something. The Void wasn't a parasite. It was an absence of light.. What was the Moon if not an entity that lived in the absence of the sun? I didn't try to fight the ink. I embraced it. I let go of the spark of the Harbinger. I reached into the cold black vacuum within my arm and pulled it into my chest. My eyes didn't glow violet; they turned a terrifying starless black.

I held her tighter, my red eyes scanning the abyss for something I could fight. Something I could kill. But there was nothing to fight. Nothing to kill. Just the void, and the eye, and the voice that made every god in every pantheon look like ants. You know when your mind sees something that is so utterly beautiful, so unworldly that it distinctively focuses on the pinnacle of its interest, zeroing in on that magnificent sight, having everything else blur in the background? That's what Nate's eyes did to me. The golden, caramel orbs locked on mine and it was all I could see. His eyes are red rimmed as if the surgery was still taken its toll but his face is bare and so responsive. The butterflies, the ones that have become paralyzed a few weeks back, twitch and flutter when Nate's pupils dilate and his clear, breathtaking eyes roam around my face before dropping down my body.

I could hear the cries of the little children who hid by the corners to watch their parents get drained of life by the Void. I could see the fear in their eyes, the lost hope that had immediately replaced the life that should have been there. And then, I saw it—the first time the artifacts were close to each other, brought together for the original sealing ritual.

When I go to stand back up to find somewhere to hide, I’m thrown backwards into a tree, hitting my head. I groan and let my vision come to focus. My head begins to throb as I sit up and I notice I am nowhere near the fight. A hooded figure comes to view, I try to stand but stumble from dizziness. The hooded figure gets closer and lets out a horrid screech. I start gasping as a blue wisp starts to come from my parted lips and I feel as if my energy is being drained. Right before darkness consumes me, I see those purple eyes with gold flecks.

Water droplets from a pipe leak echo in her ears. She closes her eyes. Her body hurts like hell. The pounding pain in her skull seems to go on forever. She can move but is useless because she has been attempting to find the exit but has failed numerous times. She screams every time she hears movement from a distance. She smells her waste and pees. What a fuck. She cries a lot and screams a lot, resulting in a harsh voice from deep within her throat. She's hungry. She can't recall her last meal. The shadow is forgetting about her.

In that moment, I see the question forming on his lips, the dawning realization that something fundamental has changed. But before he can speak, the sky above us tears open. A rift, larger and more terrifying than anything we've faced before, splits the heavens. Through it, I catch glimpses of other worlds, other realities – some beautiful beyond imagining, others nightmarish and twisted.
