GIOVANNI "What the hell do you mean you haven’t seen Carlo yet?" I barked. The warriors stood stiffly before me, heads bowed, eyes glued to the floor. This mess had been haunting my nights, keeping sleep just out of reach. Half a week had passed before I even learned he was the one who took the ledger. Half a damn week. "But don’t worry," Ezra said, stepping forward with confidence. "My investigation led me to a Pack. I traced his steps, I’ll bring you news before the day ends."

Ezra's eyes lit up as he laughed. "Holy shit, your salary's that high? Guess I've got to butcher you properly today, then?" he said and sat down. Dominic noticed the tension running through Ezra's entire body, coiled tight, as if he could spring up and bolt at any second. Despite the smile on his face, Ezra's peripheral vision kept sweeping the room. He was already on guard. Dominic sighed inwardly. 'A veteran criminal investigator, just as expected.'

Ezra, who was supposed to be with us as an initial, chose to roam around the hall, listening to what he could, using the skills that he had with the hunters to blend in with the crowd without getting caught. “Where is Giovanni?” Lea asked, shaking her head in question. I smirked, knowing that he was finding his way to the security room. He was going to be our eyes and ears from the outside, and considering that we might have to run away at any moment, it was best to have a map in hand if we needed it, and Giovanni was going to be so.

Then he slowly extended one hand. “Give me the pen.” Omar stared at him. Louelita bit the inside of her cheek to keep from laughing because no good had ever come from Ezra writing on a government-adjacent document while wearing that expression. Finally, Omar surrendered the pen like a man handing over a small portion of his soul under formal protest. Ezra took the document. He looked at the blank line beside current placement environment. Then, in calm, brutal block letters, he wrote: HOUSE THAT ASKS FIRST

I imagine if bread and biscuits had a love child, it would be this ration because what the hell am I eating? When I get back should I invest in research to make rations taste like food? “I could throw you a bone now, if you’d like.” Ezra speaks again. “It’s about something you’ve been curious about recently. You should be able to fit some pieces in place when you know it.” He sounds like he is smiling. “Do you want to know what I’m talking about?”

He just thought it was a fun forest vacation with Daddy and Mommy. Ava was glad for the illusion—for now. When Liam finally fell asleep, Ava met Dominic on the back deck, wrapped in a shawl. He stood at the railing, arms crossed, eyes scanning the tree line like a soldier waiting for war. “Something’s bothering you,” she said quietly. Dominic didn’t look away. “We got word today. Ezra’s gone underground.” Her blood ran cold. “Meaning what?” “Meaning, no movement, no sightings, no intercepted chatter. That’s not good. Ezra only vanishes when he’s planning something big.”

However, Chelsea recently lost her job, so Sarah needed to not screw up the interview or else they were going to end up on the streets. Meanwhile, Ezra was surrounded by huge dark rocks, the same rocks in the old caves, that he used to play in as a child back in Pineyard. He looked lost, suddenly he began plunging into an infinite abyss. He tried holding on to one of the rocks protruding inside the pit, but it broke, and he went on falling. He could hear his name being called, but he couldn't see who was calling. The voice kept calling, "Ezra, Ezra, Ezra, open your eyes, please."

Ezra said. Ezra typed codes faster than they appeared on the screen and I could tell with utter confidence that there was not a single person who could do what Ezra was doing or even fathom what he was doing. Not even our highest IQ speaker, who was almost at the edge of his seat watching Ezra closely. Even the hackers were sweating, trying to keep up with his speed. I looked at Asher, who peered at Ezra with a faint smile. Someone looks proud. I smiled, shutting my eyes, leaning back a little more assured now.

I got lucky because he’s momentarily alone. "Ezra," I whispered urgently, gripping his sleeve. " Those people up on that screen—they aren't rogues! They aren’t just civilians. You have to stop this. You need to convince King Soren to reopen the investigation. " I expected Ezra to look concerned, or to whisper a reassurance. Instead, his green eyes narrowed, his gaze turning incredibly sharp as he looked down at me. "How do you know they aren't rogues, Riley?" he asked quietly, his voice cool and calculating.

Chapter 6 Ezra paced the confines of his private chamber at the first hint of dawn, each step echoing on the stone floor, his thoughts as restless as his movements. Shadows lay strewn across the walls, faintly receding in the growing light, but the darkness in his mind refused to fade. He was consumed by the unrelenting knowledge that a traitor moved within these very halls, someone he had once trusted, now plotting to tear apart everything he had built. His jaw clenched involuntarily, the sharp tension radiating all the way down into his shoulders, as he tried to make sense of how everything had gone so wrong.
