As I hear footsteps approach from the hallway, I only notice where I am. This isn’t my home, though the design can only be a Lupin house. It isn’t Mama Tia’s either. Did Zeath bring me to one of the Lupin’s other buildings that he inherited? Because I’m certain he won’t bring me to his mom’s or his brother’s. “Hi, Melon,” East’s voice comes through the open door. I sit up to find him standing there—the ever dumb man with the demeanor of a mafia drug lord.

Minutes later, we were at home. I ordered some of the maids to get one of the rooms ready for the five-year old girl. I ordered for some things that girls her age fancy and in a couple of hours, the things were delivered and the maids got ready to furnish her room. Throughout the day, I noticed Melanie looked gloomy. When I was done supervising the maids, I walked into her room after knocking. She was lying on her bed with a novel in her hand.

MELANIE I don’t know how I made it home without crashing. My vision was blurry with tears the entire drive, and it was a damn miracle I didn’t end up in a ditch. How could everything that started so perfectly turn to absolute shit in less than twelve hours? Was I cursed? Did I really not deserve even a little bit of happiness? I pulled up to the gate and honked impatiently. I just wanted to have a hot bath, crawl under the covers, and pretend last night never happened, from Reynold’s violent hands to Gavin’s warm body and then… everything exploding in my face.

“Matthew.” “Yes.” “Tomorrow.” He nodded and turned and I pulled the door shut and turned back around. Mel had not moved from the window. She was looking out at whatever the grounds looked like at this hour with her shoulders straight and her wrapped hand still pressed to her stomach and her ginger hair falling forward slightly on one side. I stood there and looked at her and my wolf went quiet. Not the way I forced it quiet during the episodes, gripping windowsills and breathing through it. Just quiet. On its own. Like it had found what it had been looking for and stopped moving.

"Mr. Jackman, Ms. Sinclair is waiting for you in the conference room with her daughter." When Lucy walked in holding Melody's hand, she found Micah lost in thought over a spreadsheet on his computer. Five-year-old Melody was wearing the same white tulle dress Anna had worn on her birthday. She spoke in a sweet, childish voice. "Mr. Jackman, I just learned the 'Moonlight Lake.'" Music flowed from the grand piano in the conference room. Micah watched the child's flying fingers and suddenly stood up. At a certain modulation, Melody's fingering somehow overlapped with the rhythm Anna had tapped out on bottle caps on that park bench when she was seven.

I moved closer to him and started giving him light punches accompanied with some curse words. Kendall rescued his friend from my wrath and told Josh that it's a long story. We all got in the car and Josh drove us to Kendall's mansion or should I say my new home. We opened the door to enter then heard a voice "Where are you three coming from?" Shit.. "Well...um.." Kendall stumbled on his words "You do not have an explanation? You do realise Melody is a girl right? an innocent one at that who has been through a lot and you want to lead her to a wild life..."

The camera flashes non-stop taking his pictures, it made her eyes feel like they were going to go blind and the whispers around her made her dizzy. “Let me go! You are a swindler….” Melly trembled and her eyes reddened with tears. Yunifer, a cousin and a best friend, was actually dead. That fact saddened her. She staggered backward, turning to leave the place. Marvin who was quietly watching her in another corner of the room slowly backed away. Without attracting the attention of the guests, she chased after Melly who had already left the party room. The sight caught Rachel's eyes.

Miss Lillian said, trying to wave him away. "You are. And I want to thank you for taking care of Melody the way you have all these years," Alpha Evan said, his tone dripping with sincerity and reverence. I felt my chest warm at his words even though I knew somewhere in the back of my mind that he was saying all that just to get into Miss Lillian's good books. And judging with the way she was grinning right then, it was working too. "My Melody is a beautiful and special little girl. I did what I could for her. Speaking of that, what are your intentions with her?" Miss Lillian asked in a stern voice, the conversation taking a drastic turn within seconds.

Caleb refiles her glass, concern written on his features. "Easy, Melanie. Slow down." He wanted to calm her down but Melanie was now beyond slowing down. She drains the second glass, and the room begins to spin. "Melanie, maybe you've had enough." Melanie scrambles her sentences hardly understandable. "Shirley... I need to find Shirley..." she says, so Caleb gently takes the glass from her hand, snuggling her close. "We'll find her, I promise." As the helicopter levels out, Melanie's eyelids droop. Caleb’s arms embrace her, his warmth encompassing her. The next thing Melanie knew, she was in Caleb's arms, stumbling across a lovely private compartment.

Jessica added, “you can’t face her alone. Not in body. Not in dreams. Never again.” Baylee let out a shaky laugh, wet and humorless. “Collin’s going to love that part.” Jessica’s mouth twitched. “He already does.” For the first time since she’d sat down, Baylee smiled. Just a little. It didn’t last. “Okay,” she whispered. “What else?” Melody sucked in a breath. “There’s one more page.” The way she said it made Baylee’s stomach drop again. “Show me.” Melody turned the page.
