She hurried her way in, ready to rid her legs of the mud that stuck to them. Ashton messed around with the TV, sitting so close I was sure he would give himself a headache from straining his eyes. It’s direct. Shared. Seamless.”

We both entered the room before sitting in our designated spots. I had not imagined what I had been hearing. Athea and Antony had a third mate, like Lucy, Roman, and I. What the hell was the goddess playing at setting us all up like that? I wondered because nothing seemed like it was. When it came out that Veda was a Fae, I was immediately interested. Fae’s hadn’t been heard of since the early 1900’s. But apparently, they own a little slice of heaven within the woods. My interest was piqued.

“ I was hoping you’d forget.” “ Forget?” I crossed my arms. “ I’ve been stuck in bed for three days. I’ve had nothing to do but think about it.” A faint smile touched his lips, but it didn’t last. The silence stretched until I started to think he wouldn’t tell me again. Then, finally, he spoke. “ We are Fae.” The word lingered in the air, strange and ancient. “ Fae,” I repeated slowly. “ Like… fairies?” He gave a short laugh. “ Not quite. We don’t have wings or sprinkle dust if that’s what you’re thinking.”

The potential for disaster was very high. The Don Valley Pack’s prime territory had the Don Valley trails and the river running right through it’s centre. With picnic areas, bike and walking trails, it was a nature trail that saw an amazing amount of traffic because it led to other trails that spread out throughout the city. The Fae could use those trails to move throughout the city and hunt humans for fun and food. It would become a downright mess if the Fae found them.

He’d realize I’d kept it buried. And what could I have done? I was eight. A child trapped in a world of cruel, beautiful liars. So I said nothing. The Fae World is quite different from any other realm. Our age never determined how we grew, how we understood, or how deeply we felt emotions. We were dubbed the beautiful, and spirited kind for a reason. An eight-year-old Fae wasn’t the same as an eight-year-old human. Our senses were infused with the earth. We learned the language of the trees and understood the flow of the air.

This was my family, and therefore my call to make. “Why don’t you take a good, long look at me, cousin.” I stood to give him a better view. “Do I look like I belong in high fucking Fae society?” Beau leaned back in his seat, scanning me from head to toe and back up again. “I see a mighty, fearsome Fae. One who is not afraid to take what is his and slaughter anyone who gets in his way.” His feral smile returned. “You’re perfect.”

“Does it come with free snacks? Because I’ve been running for my life for twelve hours and the only thing I’ve eaten is a chocolate bar from a plastic bag in a tree.” She blinked, clearly not used to this level of chaos. “A… chocolate bar?” “Yes. Delicious. Sweet. Human food. Not magic. Not cursed. Just pure, beautiful calories.” The fae wrinkled her nose like I’d said I enjoyed bathing in sewage. “Mortals. Always so… primitive.” “Excuse me, glitterbug, but I’ve met vampires, witches, and one very moody lake spirit, and you’re by far the most judgmental.”
