The white warning text on their faceless visors fractured into a meaningless jumble of dead, un-routed ciphers before going completely dark. CRITICAL SYSTEM FAILURE: LOCALIZED REGISTRY DISCONNECT. STATUS: UNLISTED LIABILITY EXCEEDED. The remaining two battalions of the vanguard didn't retreat; their automated sub-routines didn't include an algorithm for fear. But their locomotion treads couldn't find purchase on the black ice that now coated the entire western boundary line. Their ten-foot frames began to slide wide, their heavy chassis colliding with each other with a deafening series of metallic booms that echoed through the canyons of rock like a row of falling dominoes.

Only one of those keeps her breathing. Creek doesn’t pace. Doesn’t fidget. Both palms flat on the stone, head bowed like he’s praying. He’s not. He’s listening. “They’re closer,” he says without opening his eyes. “North vessel crossed the river. East one hit the dead highway. West one’s not running. She’s flying.” Three. The last ones. And we’re underground.

Not waiting for anyone. Just ready for what came next.

“System coherence dropping. Adaptation threshold exceeded.” The Entity finally moved.

I didn't look back, because ahead lay a far wider world waiting for me. Behind me, a figure had been watching from afar. Only after the carriage completely vanished from sight did it turn away in disappointment.

I close the page, return back there again and retry, end up on nothing again. I spin it fifteen more times with no luck. It is either rigged or I just have no luck. Sighing, I drop the phone, hoping both of them are safe.

Once this moved forward, there would be no clean exit. We would either succeed quietly or fail loudly. I took a deep breath and reread my message before clicking send.
