Chapter 2: Unveiling the Truth I walked into my apartment, feeling like the weight of the world had collapsed on me. The walls of my life were crumbling—James, work, everything. The memory of getting fired flashed through my mind, followed by the cruel end to my relationship with James. Everything was spiraling out of control, and all I could do was blink back the tears. But it was too much. The dam broke, and the tears came flooding out, falling like raindrops onto the floor.

THE LAST PIECE SOFIA POV We’re falling. Alessio crushes me against his chest. Gianna screams. Nikolai fires his gun upward at the cables. Sparks. Metal shrieking. Floor numbers flying past. Ten. Nine. Eight. “BRACE YOURSELF!” Alessio roars. Seven. Six. Five. The emergency brake catches. We slam to a stop. The impact throws us to the floor. My head cracks against metal. Everything stops. They hit the invisible dome of mirrors overhead and exploded into smaller pieces, raining down as black‑edged confetti. Tears blur my eyes as I look from the shattered frame to Rhea and her wicked laugh tips me over the edge. Wrath spreads through my limbs like larva.

Suddenly, half of the roof caved in, and Kisa narrowly escaped being buried under the rubble.

“How can I believe that? How can I trust anything you say when I know you’re capable of planning something so calculated?” “You can’t. I know you can’t.” He looked broken. Utterly destroyed. “But I’m standing here anyway. I’m standing in this rain for as long as it takes. I’m making myself a public spectacle. I’m letting the whole world see me fall apart. Because I need you to know that this is real. What I feel for you is real.” I was crying openly now. “Standing in the rain doesn’t prove anything.”

Once there, I walked over to the bed and nearly fell on my way. "Alexis are you okay?" I heard James ask but my vision was blurry as dark spots appeared. "Yeah just...." I didn't get to finish my sentence because the next thing I knew, I was falling but luckily I didn't hit the floor as James scooped me up in his hands and placed me on my bed. "What's going on?" I heard Nick ask but his voice seemed further away. He kept asking but James didn't say anything as he ran into my bathroom and returned with my pills in one hand and water in the other.

Why did it seem like the floor was falling from beneath me? Why did I feel like my carefully curated plans were all falling apart? I looked out the window of the attic. My eyes stared down at the chessboard. My foot came up and I kicked the board across the room. The pieces exploded around the room and the board imbedded itself into the wood beam of the roof. “FUCK!”

Instinctively, I clutched my belly, my voice barely a whisper. “Hospital… take me to the hospital.” Dario looked down at me, irritation clouding his eyes. “It’s just a fall. Is that really necessary? Get up. You’re not a child. Stop pretending to be so fragile.” But the pain kept getting worse. I couldn’t even form words anymore. Maybe it was the sweat pouring down my face, or the fact that I couldn’t raise my head, but for the first time, a flicker of panic flashed across Dario’s face.
