Nothing special or noteworthy. So who the hell was the new girl he supposedly imprinted on? *** I passed a long front desk manned by librarians and their assistants and headed straight for the aisle Celeste directed me to. As I rounded a large, sturdy bookshelf, I offered her a small wave before disappearing in between the rows of books on display. The book I was looking for was giant, silver, and had all kinds of symbols inscribed into its spine. I was reluctant to pull it from the shelf, as the bindings appeared to be in a meager state, and a girl was watching me from an armchair close by.

But hope, like magic, has a price, and I am increasingly aware of that price. The book itself is a work of macabre art. The cover, made of dark leather that almost appears black, pulses with a life of its own, as if it were breathing. The leather is stained with deep shades of red, almost as though it has been soaked in blood over the centuries, giving it a sinister and throbbing appearance. Along the edges of the cover, aged silver chains are interwoven in complex patterns, depicting ancient runes and seals of protection, symbols only an enchantress could decipher. I turned around, curious to see who had arrived, and my heart skipped a beat as I saw a shadowy figure emerging from the crowd. As the figure stepped into the light, I felt like I had been punched in the gut. It was Sophia, standing tall and confident in a stunning black dress that hugged her curves in all the right places. The dress was made of a sleek, shiny material that caught the light, and it was cut low in the front, revealing a tantalizing glimpse of cleavage.

No visible title on the spine. She knew every book on that shelf. This one had not been there yesterday. She pulled it out slowly. The cover was plain and heavy, the kind of leather that had stopped trying to look like anything in particular a very long time ago. When she opened it the pages were dense with text in a language she recognised immediately. Not from a class. From her own recent searching. From the footnotes of other things, citations that led nowhere, texts that referenced something without naming it directly. One of the dead languages.

A book was sticking out from the shelf above us, its spine a glimmering gold that seemed to catch the light. My eyes widened, and I pointed up at it. “Look!”

But then my fingers felt something against the book's spine, something that was definitely too hard to be leather. My eyes squinted and I ran my fingers over the spot and tried to feel what it was. Something was stuck in the spine, some sort of metallic object I assumed. How had it even gotten there? I wondered and carefully opened the pages, checking for a way to undo the binding without tearing the book apart. After playing with the hardbound for a while I could remove it and saw that there was another special kind of slit inside the cover. My heart began to beat in excitement as I carefully set the pages aside and spread the leather cover flat on the table.

After a moment of pondering, I decided to take the right spiral staircase, following my instincts. When I got to the top of the staircase it opened up into a giant foyer with more magical books adorning every wall. Most of them were silver spined, sparkling in the sunlight that was glinting through the large picture window opposite of the room. I ran my fingers across the spines as I walked through the foyer, noting how silver glitter fell softly off every book.

They were all beautiful and made the whole book look very impressive. The edges of the pages were gilt in two shades of gold, with a pattern of flames. And there was a large leather and gold clasp holding it closed which was engraved with more motifs of flames. The corners also each had a gold triangular brace, each with another fire opal in. Eliza stares at the book in wonder,

“do not read your own book—you might not like how it ends.” Glancing further up the case, the letter ‘G’ was carved in deeply. I scanned the books with my eyes and found myself reading the names that were painted on the spines of the books. Glenda Macon, Gregory Marsh, Gwyn Masters… Each book had a name embroidered on the spine. The books were all black, with names in a flat white. Very few books actually looked different from the others. The one named, Glenda Macon, had a rose with thorns dancing along the cover. I even noticed one that was a shade of slate grey.

At first, it was just… mass. Piled tomes, some leather‑bound, some cheap paperbacks, some thick, cracked hardcovers. They stacked themselves, spines grinding against spines, pages fusing together, bindings bursting, until they made a torso. Arms built themselves from arrhythmic columns of volumes, hands of splayed, stiffened pages whose edges glinted sharp as blades. Chains meandered out of the mess—hundreds of bookmarks, metal and ribbon and cord, weaving themselves into links that wrapped around the book‑body like restraints turned adornment.
