The cover was embossed with a symbol that looked like a twisted, enraged claw mark. Nate crossed the room, the ghost sense of Kieran’s touch still tingling on his skin. He stood beside his chair, close enough to feel the warmth coming from him, and peered down at the pages. The script was old, but the images were brutally clear: depictions of wolves, but different. They were monstrously big, their musculature exaggerated and vicious, with four separate, scary sets of fangs in their gaping maws.

Lucas teased, grinning at Raphael. "This is Scuttlebutt, my loyal familiar," I said, beaming with pride as I scratched behind Scuttle's ears. "And that's Jinks, Lucas's faithful familiar." Raphael's eyes sparkled with curiosity. "Familiars, you say? I'm not familiar with the concept." I chuckled at the pun, launching into an explanation. "Familiars are supernatural beings with the ability to shapeshift. They're powerful, and magical, and serve as our protectors and guides. They amplify our abilities and assist us in mastering our craft." Raphael's eyes widened, intrigued. "Fascinating! I think I might need a familiar of my own. Where do I sign up?"

This was kind of my symbolism for pushing through, not giving up, and valuing perseverance. Aside from that, I had no clue what to do. So I just started googling fantasy maps and how to make them. I somehow stumbled my way upon freefantasymaps.com where there were these mapmaking competition entries. I fell in love with the style of this one map entry I saw there, called The Land of Mórthyr, created by Warren Godone-Maresca. But yeah…when I tried to emulate his technique, let’s just say it didn’t work out so well. The other initialed VB and was outlined in red. Something tells me that the purple lined faery realm was Dimitris due to his wing color and the abudant use of the color purple in his realm when I was there. And of the two large fairy realms one had to have been Jaspers...my asshole fathers. Tracing my finger along each edge of their borders the colors changed and seemed to light up and become more vibrant. I quickly removed my finger and the colors dulled back down. Now a publisher was interested in me and not only that, but the owner of the company was also my favorite author. At first, I didn’t know he was the author of my favorite books, but he told me he was and that was part of the reason he was interested in my work. His books are what inspired me to write fantasy novels. The main topic I focused on was dragons. Cyran also wrote dragon fantasy, but unlike mine, his weren’t focused on romance. Having read the email a hundred times, I still couldn’t believe that in just three hours I would be meeting my idol.
