As he ran, Caio had to update Adam on what was happening. “They took her,” he said breathlessly, his voice broken by the sprint. “What?” Adam slammed his hand on the table and shot up from his chair. “I need to try to catch her. I’ll call you back,” Caio replied, hanging up so he could focus on running. He pushed himself harder, trying to intercept her at the elevator, but when he got there the doors were already closing. He punched the metal door and raced toward the hospital stairwell, figuring they were heading down to the parking garage.

Every room, every path, and even the stable that I’d slept in for five years, were displaying right in the middle of the screen.

I looked at the absurd expression on his face and simply replied, "I'm not your sister. Maddison Sullivan is." Then I called security and had him escorted off campus. As for Brandon, I heard that he and Maddison had dated for a while, but they broke up not long afterward. Rumor had it that Maddison met a wealthier guy at Crestview and dumped him. Brandon came all the way to the South Coast looking for me. He stood outside my dorm building in the rain all night, saying he wanted another chance. I found it laughable. After tossing him an old umbrella from the dorm hallway, I loudly told him to get lost.

The moment the recording ended, it felt like my insides were burning. "Hang in there, Dottie… Mommy will save you. Just wait a few more hours, okay?" I watched the van disappear into the rain. I didn't chase it and throw my life away. I knew, for a fact, that I needed power—someone who could crush Chester and make that van stop.

My eyes flutter and I breathe harder against his hand, which is still firmly in place over my mouth. We hear the toilet flush, the sink run, and the door open and shut once more. Elliot drops his hand from my mouth and pulls his fingers out from between my legs. I gasp in both frustration and relief.

No matter how vivid a story once was, it would eventually become a part of the past. I closed my eyes. This time, the image that came to mind was no longer of Julian's clear, cool eyes on that snowy mountain.

A man, who appeared travel-worn and was holding takeout, rushed to the bedside of the girl next to me. She frowned, scolding him, "I told you not to come. All that networking must be exhausting. I’m fine. You should rest."
