When I returned home during the holidays, before I even had the chance to see Mark, I ran into Lily. Standing at the doorway, she was almost unrecognizable. She had lost a lot of weight. Her clothes couldn’t hide the marks on her body. Even her eyes were filled with fear. A once beautiful girl now looked completely drained of life. I wasn’t surprised to see her like this. In my previous life, I had almost been tortured to death by Jackson, too. When Jackson found out about his infertility, he could no longer do things in bed. During work, he kept his head down, but at home, he needed to vent.

“But why? She’s so young.” Ailm lowers her head slightly. “War is coming. I can feel it in my bones. I had no choice.” Caden reaches for her again—but freezes. On his palm, a strange mark glows: a circle with a cross inside. Ailm nuzzles it. “It’s like a current,” he says, shocked. “It’s an Ailm mark,” she explains. “We are fated. Not just mates—fated. A rare, divine connection.” Drake stiffens. “Will Baylee wear the same mark?”

“I don’t want power. I don’t want fear. I want someone with warmth. Someone who’ll see me, not just claim me. My mate has to have a heart, not one that’s locked away behind walls.” Rainey studied me for a long moment, her eyes searching mine. Then she sighed and gave a small shrug. “Maybe you’re right. Maybe the Goddess won’t pair you with him. But still…” She glanced back toward the fire, where a ripple of voices rose louder, “…sometimes fate doesn’t ask what we want.” I felt the weight of her words press against me as I turned my gaze to the clearing, my stomach knotting tighter. Because deep down, I wasn’t sure if I was ready to find out what fate had in store for me.

She inquired, reasoning that in the worst-case scenario, she might be able to utilize some of this information to her advantage, especially if others were eager to kill her for it.

"I like it, the name you chose for him." Told me...? "I'm Fate," she said. "I know everything." My mind tried to shy sideways, but her magic held me softly in place as I struggled with the concept. She beamed like the sun itself, her hair dancing in the breeze, her white dress billowing like a sail. Her eyes sparkled like the stars, and that smile—it was the warmest light I had ever known, though I had taken it for granted until it was gone. “Wendy…” Her name caught in my throat, and a sudden warmth stung my eyes. She tilted her head, flashing me a puzzled smile. “What’s got you so lost in thought? Come on, hurry up!” My legs moved on their own, my heart racing like a drum. Am I reborn? I wondered, the thought both thrilling and terrifying. Have I really come back to that moment?

Still a young teen her face is wide and innocent, her coppery hair wild and messy with her dark eyes keen and focused. “Do you know who I am?” I ask, leaning against her tree, trying to look cool as she spun in slow circles back and forth. She sized me up, as brutally as only a child can do, her face scrunched up. “You’re Alpha Cillian’s friend. You helped him save Matilda.” “I’m Zena, yes.” “You’re a Fate?” “Working on it. Nearly there,” I smile. “Did you see me?” she asks, her question cutting straight to the core. No messing around with teens, no mind games. I could have danced around this issue for an hour with her sisters. Phoebe is straight as an arrow.
