It was a dilemma that required a quick decision, one that balanced her fear with the urgency of the situation. With a prayer on her lips, she mustered up the courage to step into the elevator, despite her escalating phobia. As the doors closed, her heart raced, and her fear intensified. She tightly shut her eyes, gripping her hands together, desperately seeking solace in deep breaths to calm her frayed nerves. The confined space seemed to suffocate her, threatening to trigger another panic attack. The weight of her phobia bore down on her, amplifying the tension and making each passing second feel like an eternity. She yearned for the doors to open, to escape the clutches of her fear.

Aunt Bernadetted laughed as she typed on her phone. We entered the elevator and even though she was busy with her phone, she was quick enough to hold my hand like she always does before the elevator door closed. I smiled there. I fear elevators— because it was suffocating for me. But I could manage that fear to not interfere with my daily encounter with elevators. My fear only doubles when I'm in the hospital elevator. In this instance, I couldn't stay alone in an elevator— I would freak out and the worst thing that would happen was me collapsing.

I grumble as I pull up in another parking bay. “Evidently, one that thinks they can do what they want and doesn’t give a toss.” We get out of the car and walk toward the back entrance of the building. Ayla walks over to the elevator while I make a beeline to the stairs. By the time they reached the 50th floor, Iris had closed her eyes, refusing to look down.

She rolled her eyes, refusing to object further. As they stepped into the elevator, Hazel’s body tensed. A shiver ran through her, her fingers curling tightly around the fabric of her dress. With a soft ding, the elevator doors slowly slid open. Without a second thought, she rushed inside, as if something terrifying was chasing her from behind. She quickly pressed the button for the first floor, then leaned against the elevator wall, gasping for breath. We both entered the luca carrier as Linda calls it. From my thoughts and slight fear for elevators I expected the old fashioned thing to fall off, hang or do something out of this world, but I can’t believe it actually worked perfectly.
