“I have never seen one,” the ledger elder whispered, honesty slipping.
“Dangerous,” someone said. I did not track which mouth was brave or stupid enough to shape it.
I did not raise my voice. I did not need to. “You will not use that word for her again.” I let each syllable land like a nail.
They couldn't say a word. The cane stopped squeaking. The room held its breath again, but for me now.
