Beasts of the Moon
I toss my blades aside and shift mid stride, body breaking, reshaping, the wolf ripping out of me as I launch at him.
We collide. Mud, teeth, claws. His strength crushes into me. His hate is a weight, a storm inside his jaws. And I have only love inside me. Love for Iris, my wife.
He tears at me, and for the first time fear grips me.
Fear of dying. Fear of failing Iris. Fear of losing her.
I falter and Simon takes the opportunity, striking me. His claws pierce my neck, hot painful fire lancing down my spine. Blood gushes, my breath ragged. He looms over me, paw braced on my chest, his other raised to deliver the killing blow.
