My mouth was open, but no sound came out. In that second, my right ear was destroyed, the auditory nerve obliterated. I collapsed to the floor, convulsing, curling into a ball. The hall was silent. All eyes were fixed on Caleb, beside the dais. And Caleb, as if his spine had been ripped out, collapsed to the floor, his eyes vacant and lifeless.

AURELIA POV♡ The next day I am finally able to go back home. The doctors spent most of the morning checking my condition again before approving the discharge. My head still feels heavy, and the inside of my ears keeps reacting to sudden sounds in an uncomfortable way. They explained that the fall and the water pressure likely disrupted my hearing more than they first expected, so the hearing aids I had been using before no longer function properly. A technician came in earlier and fitted me with a new pair. The sound through them is clearer, but every now and then a sharp jolt still runs through my ear, like a sudden pulse of pressure that makes me pause for a second until it fades.

As I watched her take off her shoes, I instinctively stepped forward, ready to hang up her coat. It was my duty in this family. Standing before her, I spoke softly, "I was wrong. I'll work even harder in the future. Will you forgive me?" However, my words faded into the air. My mom did not hear a thing. Instead, she frowned slightly in irritation. "My ears suddenly feel itchy. Am I getting sick?" I stood there awkwardly, lowering my head to look at my own transparent body. I had almost forgotten. I was already dead, and no one could hear the words of the dead.

The rain flowing down my hair takes away most of my vision, forcing me to rely mostly on my other senses. I still myself, trying to focus my heightened ears; trying to hear past the storm, hoping to get something from the dorms. Rain drops falling on leaves, branches breaking from the winds, a deer running in the bushes, critters shivering in the undergrowth, laughter—THATS IT—Then thunder cracks above me, sending shockwaves throughout my ear drums. The pain forces me to scream. I shut my ears with my hands almost instantly as I fall to my knees. Note to self; never use wolf hearing in a bad storm. Fuck.

For a minute, all I hear is a screeching, deafening sound. I fall to the ground as my vision turns blurry. I hear faint laughter in the background and something about the boss' nephew liking "this one." Then I fade into oblivion.

THERE WAS A loud beeping sound that I kept hearing and I wasn't sure what it was. I tried opening my eyes but I couldn't, it felt like they were glued together with superglue or sewed shut. I tried lifting my hand to rub my eyes but there was someone holding on to it with an iron like grip. Am I dead already? Is this how being dead feels like? This is not the way I wanted to go, my subconscious said. No of course I'm not dead. Because if I was, then I wouldn't be talking to my subconscious right? Right.

The doctor was saying something but I couldn't quite hear him, I was able to hear his last statement. “Or else you will go deaf.” He said and I felt my world crumbling before me. I couldn't believe my ears, I quickly stormed inside the room. “What did you just say?” I asked, my gaze fixed on the doctor. I felt like I had been punched in the gut. I couldn't seem to process what I heard. Adam would go deaf, this wasn't happening. Not to my husband. That was a possibility I had never considered. I wasn't prepared for this sort of news, the thought of Adam not hearing my voice anymore was unbearable. I wouldn't wish that for my enemy. This was the worst thing that could happen to me at that mome

The sound was so irritating and deafening. I couldn't hear a thing, just an irritating sound that made me grit my teeth. But sure enough, I felt my body being yanked off. I felt myself fall in a thud on the floor. I was curled on the floor as I struggled to hear when I felt a painful grip on my upper arm. At that moment, I detected the scent of death.
