I drifted between waking and oblivion, my body sweating, my chest burning, and always — always — the knowledge that I was not alone. The room pulsed with it. Even when I shut my eyes, I felt him there, an anchor in the storm, breathing steady, stubbornly refusing to leave me. And in the fever, memory bled into dream. The street. The ambush.

My mate’s arms were the safest place for me. “Are you awake?” He whispered against my hair. “Yeah,” I answered. I slept a lot these days and I had a series of bizarre dreams that only stopped yesterday. The doctor said my high fever may be the cause but a small part of me didn’t believe it. It was just a wolf that liked to play roughly.
