He wasn't there and the desk was empty, yet something in me lurched at the sight. ‘What was wrong with me?' I swallowed, looking away to center my thoughts. The books. Right. Plopping onto the soft surface, I looked properly at the books I acquired, ready to clear my mind. I let myself get drowned in the mass of words that came meaninglessly. The first book I read was some kind of fantasy romance adventure. One which entailed a woman who had to run away from her home and found herself another family in the form of two siblings and another pack. It was strange to say the least, but it kept my mind momentarily distracted.

“Do you read?” Evelyn hesitated, then smiled faintly. “When I can. Nothing like this, though.” She gestured at the endless shelves. “Mostly novels, things I can carry in a bag.” Gregory chuckled, a low, warm sound that surprised her. “That’s how I started too. Cheap paperbacks, stolen hours at night when I should’ve been sleeping. Books are companions. The kind that never leave you, even when the people do.” Evelyn blinked. She hadn’t expected that kind of honesty from him. “I didn’t think someone like you would…” She stopped herself, embarrassed.

That’s seriously impressive. I never read nonfiction unless it was for school.” “Fiction and nonfiction both have their places in terms of entertainment and how informative they are. I feel like fiction does a better job of overall explaining the human condition and how people tick than nonfiction does because of the variety of characters’ emotions and motivations.” “That makes sense. I suppose there are psychology textbooks but those are clinical and often use terms laypeople can’t understand.”

Biting my nail, I opened my Kindle app from my phone and scrolled through the romance novels. I’d never been a huge romance reader, more of fantasy and sci-fi, but it wouldn’t hurt, would it?
