**Chapter 2: Cracks in the Facade** My lungs forgot how to work. The moon poured cold silver over everything, turning the backyard into some kind of nightmare stage. Damien’s mouth was still on Lisa’s, his fingers tangled in her platinum hair like he’d done it a thousand times. My best friend. My fiancé. The words “my real mate” kept punching holes in my skull.

I walked back over to her, reaching down to take her left hand, my fingers firmly intertwining with hers, the heavy emerald diamond glittering between us. "Your ex-fiancé just handed us the rope, love," I said, a slow, predatory grin spreading across my lips. "They think they're setting a trap for us at nine tomorrow morning." Hazel looked up at me, her dark eyes narrowing with a sudden, matching determination. "What are we going to do?" "We are going to let them think they're winning," I murmured, leaning down to press a soft, lingering kiss against her knuckles. "And then, Hazel... we are going to burn their entire merger to the ground."

I went to the kitchen to make a cup of coffee, came back to the room and woke up Mara with a kiss stretching the cup of coffee to her. "Hi honey," She said. "My heart robes.. How is your night beautiful?" I asked. "It is splendid and yours?" She asked. "Greater than you think" I replied. "After the last fight.. I am getting married to you" I replied and she suddenly became sad. "Don't worry.... I will come out of the fight alive" I added and she smiled. "I will be waiting until then," She replied. "For no reason, should you attempt magic on Nightwalker during the fight even if I am at the point of death.. It is highly prohibited" I warned in a mild way.

Sensing Blaine standing in the doorway, Val swallowed any retort he had as to not wake his lover, but turning and finding Blaine had followed him; he waited for the torrent of fury as Blaine ground out a curse finding his younger cousin in the elf's bed. "Damn the Seven Valerian! You took him into your bed, have you lost all of your senses?!" Blaine's voice rose with each accusatory sentence. Val quickly threw a tunic on and grabbed Blaine by the arm and nearly hauled him from the bedchamber.

I’m hoping that won’t matter after a few more days. A strange kind of high consumes me. I know Freya is alive. I play images of bursting through those Rising Star double doors and finding her. I want to sweep her into my arms and see her eyes blaze with ferocious color. I imagine placing my hand on her rounded stomach and a strange fluttering consumes my belly.
