MOON OF ASHES
The wolf’s growl deepened, ears flattened against its skull.
“Whatever’s in there,” Mara said tightly, “it’s trying to get out.”
Caleb moved closer to the edge, eyes fixed on the runes carved into the crystal’s surface. “No,” he murmured. “It’s not trying. It’s succeeding.”
A thin fissure zigzagged across the crystal’s side, leaking a glow so bright it hurt to look at. The light inside was no longer braided red and silver but shifting, as if two forces were wrestling for control. With every pulse the crack widened a fraction more.
