Eleanor wanted to say something on my behalf, but I subtly shook my head to stop her. Charlie suddenly walked up and stood behind Eleanor's side, his entire demeanor shifting as he sized Eleanor up. He stared at Eleanor's priceless watch, his eyes gleaming with interest. "It must be so dull sleeping with an old man like Shawn." He then leaned close and whispered in Eleanor's ear, "You should give me a chance instead. I'm younger and much more interesting than Shawn."

I peeked around the corner to see Charlotte holding the napkin, staring down at it. Was she just going to take it, I wondered? After everything she’d said, everything we’d agreed on, she was going to— Rip. My brows shot up as I watched charlotte tear the napkin in half and chuck it into a nearby trashcan. Pride flared within me as I watched the scene. “That’s our girl,” my wolf purred. I shoved him down, rolling my eyes at the choice of phrase, and listened. “Kieran and I are allies,” Charlotte was saying. “We both want what’s best for Nora. That’s it.”

What will I do now? “Do you want to stand there forever? Aren't you going to sit down?” I was surprised when I heard his manly and elegant voice. I frowned because that voice was too familiar to me but I didn't know where I heard his voice. “What's your name?” I feel like he's starting to interrogate me. He looked at me but his handsome face was grumpy. He stared at me for so long. “I am Charity Valderama.” He nodded his head and looked again at the document that he was reading.

"We’re moving her to the vault." But Charlie isn't moving. She’s staring at the mark on Elara’s neck. Her face has gone a terrifying shade of gray. Her hands are over her mouth. "Charlie?" I ask. She starts to shake. "I know that mark," she whispers. "You’ve seen it in the archives?" Kaleb asks gently. "No," she chokes out. She backs away, her eyes wide and unseeing. "Not the archives." She looks at us, and the devastation in her eyes is total.

It was hard not to blame him for the trouble they'd encountered on this hunt, including the bullet hole in Leo's arm. Across the table, Charlie was talking to herself and flipping through Rinaldi's atlas. It sounded like she was repeating "pinpricks of light" under her breath, but he had no idea what that meant. Charlie was remaining here in Dubrovnik to continue working on these clues. As was Alexei, the closest thing the Set had to a cryptographer. And Jackson and Xavier had orders to stay close and act as additional protection, in addition to finding out what they could about Nash's team and their potential whereabouts in the area.
