Red and blue lights began flashing everywhere. Lila looked around in terror, covering her ears as the noise grew louder and louder, as though the entire den was about to explode. There were three kinds of alarms for each code. Code yellow for a missing patient. Code pink for an infant/child abduction. Code grey for system failure. In this case...door opening. All three had similar beats. Three clicks and one siren. But the duration between clicks and the gap between the siren blaring was what set them apart. The alarm grew louder. Emergency lights flashed across the walls. The researchers moved toward the chamber. “We need to evacuate the lab.” Edward turned sharply. “Not yet.” The second researcher hesitated. “Sir, the fire suppression system will activate soon.”

Monday afternoon, the fire alarm went off at two forty-seven. Not the soft chime of a drill. The full blare — the kind that makes you stop mid-sentence and look up with the particular alertness of someone whose brain hasn't yet determined whether this is performance or emergency. The overhead lights began pulsing red and white. Someone down the hall swore. The announcement system clicked on with the mechanical voice that always sounded slightly judgmental about the fact that you were still in the building during an evacuation.

Miller shouted. "Evacuating!" I yelled. If the fire alarm went off, the magnetic locks on the server room doors would automatically disengage for safety. It was a standard building code feature Julian had told me about once. Up on the 40th floor, the door would pop open. "Julian!" I screamed in my head. "Run!"

My head began to spin with these blinking lights, and my fingers did not touch the emergency phone numbers. My body stepped back, pressed against the elevator door. The lights turned off!
