It was desperate. Ava's eyes snapped open, wide and startled. "Lucas," she breathed, her voice barely a whisper. She tried to push him away, her hands finding purchase on his chest, but he didn't budge. He was too close, his heat radiating through her, his scent filling her senses. Her heart pounded against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat echoing his own.

The stones were arranged around a larger stone which was smooth and blank faced. The markings on the stones would respond to their presence like the torchlight, but not all would enlighten as they passed them. At times, it was only the flower which illuminated. Though, at other times, it would be the flower and another mark, and the great stone in the center would magically enlighten with the image of the flower, also. They had passed the intersections of several halls, and Avera had become overwhelmed with her interest at the stones. The flame from the fire grew, as my flesh began to feel the heat rising from it, while he called upon the power of the sunstone. The earth beneath my feet began to shake, and I watched Carla take a step back, as she tried to steady herself on her feet. As the earth shook, the heir’s chants grew louder, as if he wanted the Gods from the heavens to hear him, and as if they did, the sunstone began to glow brighter.

I already asked my question, and I wouldn't get another. "I believe we had a deal, King Garren. I held up my end. Now it is your turn to hold up yours." I nodded, stepping towards the case that held the stone. With a wave of my hand, the magic ward around it fell, and I opened the case and pulled out the stone, breaking off a piece. "A sliver of Hellstone," I said, offering her the piece. She took it carefully, eying it before slipping it into a small pouch she must have had in a hidden pocket.

As he touches it, the tome hums to life. Crystal Tome (in a chorus of voices): "Truth sealed in stone. Flame remembered. Let the heir speak." Xavier (narrowing his eyes): "I don't want their lies. I want the first fire. The real one." [A pulse of heat slams into his chest. The tome flips open—pages of volcanic light flickering with images. What the High Temple Erased Projected before him in light and heat: a vision of ancient wolves gathered at the Flame Altar. One lays paws on another's wounded side—its fire curling not to burn but to knit bone.

I turned back to Julia and gently whispered, "Your wish is my command." Simon's eyes widened in shock, his gaze fixed on me. Nicole, confused, could only pout and let her tears fall. I did not look at Simon. Instead, I gently squeezed Nicole's cheek, coaxing a smile from the little one. Ella's shy smile was directed at me as she said, "Lily, you know how terrified I was. We nearly lost the baby." Ella dabbed at her eyes, the picture of vulnerability. "Simon mentioned your bracelet has healing powers, that you wore it when Nicole was born."

The molten fissure pulsed once, then began to seal itself, crusting over in glowing veins of cooled obsidian and ash. A roar of relief and wonder swept the chamber as the rift’s glow faded. The sentinel bowed its burning head, then dissolved into smoke that drifted upward, lost among fractured runes on the vaulted ceiling. Yet before the chamber could still, a chilling chorus rose behind them, thousands of cultists chanting in unison, pressing forward through the newly closed fissure. Fendrel met them with a battle cry. “Form ranks!” Seraphiel raised her sword, wings unfurling. “Stand fast, defenders of Emberstone!”
