Fire was a living thing. I had learned that a long time ago. It breathed, it consumed, and it destroyed everything in its path. But this fire—this wildfire—was different. It wasn’t just alive. It was hungry. The flames roared behind us, devouring the dry forest in seconds, the sky above turning black with smoke. Every gust of wind sent embers spiraling into the air, carried on the back of a storm that seemed hell-bent on chasing us down. The heat was unbearable, like standing too close to an open furnace, and the air was thick with the acrid stench of burning wood and ash.

Her thumb hovered over the button. Liam’s eyes widened. “Helen, don’t.” Her voice was calm, serene. “The past has to end somewhere.” I barely had time to scream before the ground beneath us exploded in light and sound. The chapel behind her erupted, fire tearing through the night sky. The force knocked us both off our feet, the heat searing my skin as I hit the ground hard. Debris rained down around us, smoke filling the air. My ears rang, my head spinning. Through the haze, I saw Helen standing amid the flames, her face illuminated in orange light.

She thought about her mother. She thought about the fire. She let herself go back into it — the heat, the smoke, the pine beam, the way her fingers had looked when she finally saw them in the light outside. She thought about crawling. About getting up anyway. About walking north with nothing and nowhere to go and the burning in her chest that she had not yet understood. She let it hurt. She let it convert.
