The city noise hit him first — honking cars, a siren somewhere — but it sounded far away, like background to the single thought hammering at his skull.
He got into his car, sat there, hands on the wheel, eyes on nothing.
The name on the paper pulsed in his mind, ugly and wrong, but it fit. Too well.
He pulled out his phone — a burner, not traceable — and dialed Lily’s number. It rang twice before she picked up, breathless.
“Dad?”
“Lock the doors,” Damian said, his voice like stone breaking. “Do not open them for anyone. I’m coming back.”
