The drive was three hours north, the Mustang eating up the miles as the landscape shifted from campus sprawl to dense, snow-dusted pine forests. Jax had the heat on low, music playing softly, one hand resting on Ryder’s thigh most of the way.
When they finally pulled up to Silver Pine Lake, the sight stole Ryder’s breath.
The water was vast and perfectly frozen, its surface glowing like molten glass under the setting sun. Tall pines ringed the shore, their branches heavy with fresh snow. It was completely silent except for the soft crunch of their boots as they got out.
