How much longer could I pretend? Shaking away the thought, I reached for the shampoo bottle. "Alright, little warrior, time to wash your hair." Lily groaned dramatically. "Ugh! But my hair doesn’t like shampoo!" "Well, your hair doesn’t get to decide," I teased, lathering her curls with the sweet scent of strawberries. She huffed but let me wash her hair, occasionally blowing bubbles off her hands. After rinsing the shampoo out, I grabbed a fluffy towel and lifted her out of the tub, wrapping her up like a little burrito.

Her expression softens as she takes a step closer, her hands clasped in front of her. “My, and what do we have here” She crouches down until she's practically eye level with a beaming Kira. “It's Pinky, from my favourite cartoon. Isn't it pretty?” Kira gushes, holding up the drawing proudly. Lydia studies the drawing, her smile widening. “Nu, razve eto ne chudesno? You have done a wonderful job, Kira” (Well, isn't this just marvellous) Kira grins, “Ava helped me.”

My whole body buzzed like I’d swallowed lightning. I could still see her face—Natalie’s face. Lila’s face. No. Not Lila. I began to sketch. The lines came fast at first—angled, angry strokes, more emotion than form. But as my hand steadied, the features took shape: the high cheekbones, the heart-shaped mouth, the sweep of dark lashes. The expression was serene. Regal. Infuriatingly familiar. Too familiar. My fingers smudged the charcoal to shade beneath her chin. I added the glint of moonlight to her hair, a suggestion of sapphire fabric around her shoulders. The more I drew, the colder I became. The heat of my earlier fury hardened into something sharper. Controlled. Useful.

All of them joined in this highly unsuspicious conversation as they carried-dragged me away from the line of people all watching the group of weirdos who apparently had never seen a tree before. The drawing was of me when I had my scraggly beard and my hair wasn’t quite right either. The artist had also taken the liberty of thickening up my eyebrows and giving me a vicious scowl. Wanted-me definitely had the face of a criminal and was also, somewhat upsettingly, much more handsome than regular-me.

I smelled the marker after opening it. God! How much do I adore that scent? Biting my lower lip in concentration, I drew a face resembling mine on his chest, near his heart. Mom always said I had the drawing ability of a four-year-old, and when I look at my masterwork, I don't disagree. The nose was shaped like a 'c,' and one eye was small and the other was large, both without lashes or a brow. My first thought for hair was wavy, but it turned out curly. Whatever it is, it is more than enough to agitate him.

Breakfast ended more slowly than I expected. Aurelia insisted on showing me the drawing she'd made after the reception. It consisted mostly of flowers, three smiling stick figures, and what she assured me was a very accurate wolf. "It has four tails," I pointed out. "It was excited." "I see." Kael glanced at the page. "I've never met a wolf with four tails." "You haven't met this one." "I stand corrected." Apparently satisfied, Aurelia folded the drawing with great care before announcing she intended to keep it forever.

“I drew this! It’s a horse.” I took the paper carefully. The drawing was crooked but sweet, then beside the horse was something that looked like a wolf. “What's this?” I asked “It's you…” “That’s me?” I was shocked. She nodded. “Yes, see I got your hair right, it's bigggg.” Lexi chuckled again, covering her mouth. “She’s not wrong.” I smiled and folded the drawing carefully. “Then I’ll keep it.” Later, when they were inside, Lexi stood to collect the mugs. “You’re good with them,” she said without looking at me.

I took a look at the drawing and smile, it was a squibbly drawing of her. Blue eyes, Blond hair tied in a ponytail and a wide smile. Tho, it was the proff of a really vast artistic yet Childish cell. I saw it as something else. I saw it as her, standing right there with crayons in arms and a wide smile across her lips. I smiled slightly and carrased the picture, I know just where to put it. I turned it over and I arched an eyebrow on seeing something. “1..9..9..2?” I called out in confusion.

She lay on the bed, kicking her legs in the air as she coloured her drawing. It didn't come out as planned, but it did look similar to what she pictured in her head. Her short hair was messed up and unnecessarily filled with pins. She hummed, tapping her chin thoughtfully with her head tilted to the side to observe her work. It was still missing something. Sunshine. She picked her yellow coloured pencil and drew a big bright sun.

My face lit up with heat. I looked down at Yara. There was a flash—smugness, like she thought she won. My face went cold. I pried her off and stepped back. "I'm not your dad. Mr. Fluffy is." She hit the floor and started wailing. Natalie rushed over and scooped Yara up, her face all panicked. "Luke, no matter what, you can't lay a hand on her. Where's the calm, patient guy you used to be?"
