“He taught me how to do this with charcoal,” she says, holding up the stub proudly. “What do you think?”
My chest softens as I meet her eyes. “It’s beautiful. You’re such a fast learner, aren’t you?”
She giggles, reclaiming the drawing and adding another line with fierce focus.
I reach out to smooth my fingers through her hair, and she pulls away with an exaggerated sigh, clearly offended by the interruption.
“You and I are going to be just fine,” I mutter under my breath before I can stop myself.
