“Where?” Ava glanced back at the monolith. The spirals on its surface had dimmed but not gone dark. In their glow she saw a faint pattern of pawprints leading away from the clearing, etched into the rock like a trail. “There,” she said quietly. “It wants us to follow.” Silas’s eyes met hers. “Do you?” She swallowed. “I think I have to.” He nodded once. “Then we go.” The guardians stepped aside, opening a path between their spears. Beyond them the trail of glowing pawprints led into a cleft in the ridge, deeper into the unknown.

That we can push back. Two more nodes left. Then we prepare to go into the black realm. The road ahead is clear now.

I look up at Livia, and she is still mouthing it, the same word, over and over—less instruction now than plea. Wait. Because they are not just tracking me. They are steering me. Belle's faint voice calling unto me. We got to a spot, with three paths in front. I wondered which way to go. I listened closer for Bella's voice. I followed the path on the right and we ran through. Then I realized Bella’s voice was coming from the opposite direction. I knew that I had followed the wrong path. I turned to Kasper,“Turn around, we are on the wrong path!” I exclaimed and he turned immediately. I listened carefully and went in the opposite direction. With Kasper following behind, we ran along the path, leading to another wing of the forest. I was more determined than ever to reach Bella.

It seemed as though it was taunting us playfully, wanting us to follow it into the tree line and into the forest. “Should we follow it?” asked Josh. It felt strange hearing him so cautious. I decided to turn the tables and be impulsive and follow my gut instinct this time. “Let’s follow it. The blue orbs led us to help last time. Maybe this will do the same.” “Ok.
