, Mitsuhide said as he walked out the door. He knew he was following her as he could now smell her in the air. It was very much like a bloodhound tracking a fox. She must have run out this way and was now what hiding? For what exactly? He wondered. He could understand her fear of the unknown and even in his case what he and the other became. It had been a horrible experience and one he didn't wholly understand himself. He had tracked her to the wooded area, and he was slightly following close enough that he could almost hear the blood pumping through her veins. It was calling out to him, but he would fight it more than anything with her he would resist the urge.

At my wedding rehearsal, the officiant asked for the third time for us to exchange rings. My best friend, Stacy Campbell, stood beside me as the maid of honor, looking impish. The path to that junction ran straight east from the outer gate. The path I found myself on after ten minutes of walking was curving north. I stopped. I held the lantern up and looked at the tree line around me. The eastern approach trail didn't curve north at this point. It ran straight for another before any significant bend. "Can you find us a way out?" Ben's face was pale, but his fingers were already dancing across his tablet. The device was scorched, the screen cracked, but somehow still functional. "The facility's schematics are fragmented, but I'm seeing a pattern. There's a central shaft—probably for equipment transport—that runs all the way from the surface to..." He paused, frowning. "The readings don't make sense. It shows the shaft going down to Level -17, but then there's another designation. Something called 'The Path.'"

The Northern Path stretched onward, jagged and unyielding, but they had survived the first trial. Kael’s hand found hers, tether steady once more. “Together?” “Together,” she agreed. Then closer. Wolves. Tracking. I didn’t stop. I shifted direction instead, cutting sideways through the trees, forcing my path through thicker growth where the ground dipped and rose unpredictably. Let them follow. I reached the stream I had marked in my mind from the few times I had been dragged near the outskirts by Eris. It was narrow, but enough. I didn’t hesitate. I stepped in. Cold bit up my legs as I moved through it, careful where I placed my feet, following the current just long enough to blur the path I had taken.

I tried to sniff him out but there was more than one smell in the forest and it was hard to disassociate one from the other. It felt like I had hit a dead end and it was my cue to just turn back and return but a part of me wasn’t willing to give up easily. I already made it this far, why turn back now? I took a good look at the paths. Four of them had overgrown weed sprouting all over while one was rocky but clear with only small weeds sprouting up from the ground. It could only mean one thing.
