My body jerked forward slightly, balance shifting as something gave way beneath my foot. I froze, my eyes glanced at my feet. The strap of my heel dangled loosely, completely broken. “Great,” I muttered under my breath, a bitter laugh escaping me. Of course, tonight will just keep getting better. I bent slightly, slipping the shoe off my foot, then the other, gripping both in one hand. The cold ground pressed against my bare feet as I straightened, ignoring the discomfort as I limped forward. My mouth pouted tightly. A bad shoe in hand, a deep scar in heart, and the words of a man who seemed like all he wanted to do was cause more chaos for me, in my mind.

"Hold on," he said to me and walked over to his table. He pulled out a pair of white flip-flops from a drawer and walked back to where I stood. To my surprise, he squatted in front of me and placed the flip-flops on the floor. "You can make use of the flip-flops for now," he said as he held my leg and carefully removed it from the shoe.

I tried to push away the thoughts of our complicated situation and focus on the dance. But just as we started moving, I felt a sudden pain in my foot. I looked down to see that my heel had broken, causing me to stumble. Reuben immediately let go of me and rushed to my side, his concern evident on his face. "Are you alright, Naomi?" he asked, his voice filled with genuine worry. I winced, trying to hide the pain. "I'm fine," I muttered, trying to regain my composure. Reuben didn't seem satisfied with my response. He bent down and gently lifted my broken heel, examining it closely. "We need to get you a new pair of shoes," he said, his voice firm.

The silver cut into my skin and made me bleed but I kept trying to get my feet out. Giving up, I took hold of my ankle with my hands. Shaking, I screamed as I squeezed as hard as I could. Suddenly, there was a cracking sound and my foot fell limp in my hands. Tears continued to stream down my face, but I didn’t stop. Straightening out my now limp foot, I tried to pull off the metal. It did manage to slip it further down, helped by the blood that was spilling out from me trying to pull it off. But it got stuck at the ball of my foot. Gianna's POV "Ouch, damn it!" I decided to take refuge on the stairwell landing, the throbbing in my foot finally becoming unbearable. I slipped off my sandals, revealing the sorry state of my little toe on my right foot, swollen and angry-looking. The sandals themselves were starting to rub, adding insult to injury. And to top it off, I didn't even have a band-aid in my bag. What a way to start the morning. And of course, it was pouring outside. Just perfect! Jeff frowned, "What do you mean?" “I have an old grandmother in a nursing home, she can't walk and has to be in a wheelchair. She lives with us in our family home and I spend a lot of my time caring for her." Frances leaned forward, “From my experience, shoes or sandals that are worn by people who are paralyzed usually have their soles as good as new, because they have never been worn.
