Then I heard it again. A footstep. Not stone settling. Not timber shifting. A footstep. I reached for the lantern. Another step sounded overhead. Then another. I extinguished the flame. Darkness swallowed me. Someone was coming down the stairs.

Moving together. Coming toward him. His chest tightened. They weren’t fighting the fire. They were marching. For him. “They know,” he whispered. The Darkness stirred inside his ribs. Not fear. Excitement. Like a predator smelling blood. Footsteps approached behind him. The eldest child stood in the doorway, barefoot, eyes reflecting the flames. “You hear them too,” the child said quietly. Sipho nodded. The middle child joined them, clutching a blanket. “Them or us?” the middle child asked.

I wanted nothing but the best for him. My eyes drew from him, leaving him the hardest than any of it. My feet moved, getting to the edge, not even thinking before walking down the steps with nothing but darkness on the other end. It was darkness so wicked, darkness so deep and as if to soak in your skin and eat you alive.

When the book moves a door opens and they can see a dark path. After confirming no one was looking at them, Alexander, Leo and Albert walk inside the dark path. After that, the door automatically closes. They light a fire in a lantern and walk further. Unknown to them something black mysterious was following them from the very first moment. After a few minutes of walking, they come to the end of the mysterious way and walk to the forest but the mysterious black thing can't enter the forest. It tries all its energy and power to walk inside the forest but it can't. After many failed attempts it return to the way it came from.

With a deep breath, I stepped out of the safety of the light. I could do this, just one step at a time. I would not look back. I would not let this fear overwhelm me again. I could feel it threatening me. It increased its choke on my throat with every footfall. I wouldn't give in. I couldn't give in. I had to keep moving. I took deliberate steps. I kept my eyes straight ahead of me. I had no idea where I was, but I kept moving because I had to. I had no choice. I struggled with the fear. I tried to come to terms with the darkness, with the things I had seen or the things I thought I saw. So what if the darkness got me? So what? Why did I care so much? I should just let it get me.
