Daphne takes large strides towards me and soon she is at my side. She suddenly pulled me close to herself, her grip strong. “Vampires and Dhampirs are at the end of the line to my left” she whispered and pulled back before walking away. I was still shaken by the whole news and my dream yesterday did nothing but add more terror. I dragged my feet across the ground making my way to the line, and just like Daphne said there are a bunch of pale looking people, who didn't bother with my existence. I stand behind them and that's when I notice they are oddly tall, including the girls.

Eight aimed to grab me by the collar but Four stopped him. “This is useless. We can’t just randomly kill anyone or we could end up all dead,” Four said, he sat down near a wall, leaning his head backward. “Why are you so sure of this? Have you played this game before?” All eyes went to me. “We all did. So, you’re a new one? Whose pet, are you?”

Maybe even…dead. ***

It was too much. "Stories that just watched a soldier turn to ash," she said. "So maybe stories worth reconsidering." The silence held for a moment. "How many did we lose?" I asked. The silence that followed was a different kind. The kind that meant the answer was going to hurt. "Four dead," Kael said. "Seven injured. Two seriously." Four. I pressed the number into my head as if I couldn't dare to forget the exact number. Four wolves who'd been alive this morning, who'd survived everything the world had thrown at them to end up here in the Deadlands, dead now because Julian was hunting me.
