I dropped to my knees full of disgust at myself when I heard Justin's gasp of shock behind me.

It was a good decision to run out of the window. Before he reached the window, he scooped Aurora into his embrace in bridal style. He jumped out of the window while looking at Aurora, who opened her eyes at the same time. I felt as if someone sucked up all the air present in my lungs. Her lifeless purple eyes were now glowing, filled with rage and sparks. The whole world around us disappeared as all I could see was her eyes. Onyx landed smoothly and started running. She howled painfully when the bones of her thighs and pelvis snapped this time.

From her back, a dazzling pair of angelic wings unfurled in a blaze of shimmering light, spreading wide like a divine storm. With a powerful beat, she soared down among the attackers like an avenging angel, her wings casting swift shadows over the chaos. Her eyes blazed with righteous fury as she struck, moving with a speed and grace that stunned even me. She took down one vampire with a sweeping strike of her hand, sending him crashing into the trees. Another shifter lunged, but Gwen’s wings whipped around him, knocking him off his feet like a gale. Her fingernails elongated into obsidian claws, her teeth sharpened into fangs, and with a sound of tearing cloth, a pair of powerful wings flared from her shoulder blades. Orion felt the change instantly. The bond between them, usually a one-way street of his dominance, suddenly roared to life with a twin flame. It hit him like a physical blow, and he lost every ounce of the control he usually prided himself on. He didn't wait for the enemies to reach her. He slammed into her mid-shift, his body a blur of muscle and scales as he drove her back against the trunk of a massive tree that stood near the edge of the courtyard.

“This is what you fight for? A trembling girl who couldn’t even finish me? You are both weak.” I straightened, turning my gaze on him. My body screamed with every movement, but rage steadied me. “You think this is a weakness?” I asked, voice low. “Look around you. Your men are dead, your power is broken and you…” I stepped forward, dragging my blade free from the dirt. “…are nothing but a man choking on his own lies.” He spat blood, sneering. “You’ll regret leaving me alive.” Storm crouched beside him, pressing a boot into his chest with just enough force to make him groan. “Oh, don’t worry. We’re not leaving you alive. Just not in the way you want.”

I can see the faint outline of what looks like wings spread behind her. Wings of fire that seem to take the shape of a heart… A piercing scream rips through the air as her power increases tenfold and surges into the sky, emanating in waves around her. I see the swirls of the flames behind her move before I see a tiny part of her left wing snap and shrivel into embers of ash. It’s too blinding to look at, and I’m forced to avert my gaze.

I moved through the frenzy, targeting the ones who tried to breach our flank. The pass became a crucible. Our breaths ragged. The bond pulsed fiercely amid the clash. I heard whispers, memories , my mother's voice, songs, regret, strength. A flash above. A figure descended not on wings, but riding a storm. Cloaked, unmasked. Power flooding, winds swirling. Cultists faltered. The battle stilled as all eyes turned upward. She landed. The storm obeyed her. The wind bowed. Lightning cracked at her feet. Eyes blazing violet.

I didn’t want to pull on my wings because I really liked the hoodie I was wearing, and my wings would make mincemeat of it. I caught her eyes and all I could see was anger and hatred boiling in them. I pushed with my aura so hard my hands felt like fire against her arms. She started making a sound that was close to pain and then suddenly Cash pulled us apart. I was now standing behind Cash as he faced the clawing wolf himself. “Stop it, before you get hurt!” Cash growled at her. She immediately stopped and started sobbing as she quickly rubbed the burn marks on her arms that my hands had left behind.
