The book's a proper Cold War artifact, which explains a lot. Ludlum wrote it in 1980, so the paranoia is all about governments and intelligence agencies as these faceless, monolithic entities you can't trust. The movie had to update that for a post-9/11 audience—now the threat is a rogue CIA black ops program, which feels more like an organization gone bad than the entire system being rotten. That shift changes Jason Bourne's motivation completely. In the novel, he's trying to figure out who he is while being hunted by Carlos the Jackal, this legendary assassin. The movie swaps that for Treadstone and a more personal revenge angle against his own creators.

The amnesia is handled differently, too. The book has these longer, more internal stretches where Bourne pieces together language skills and habits, almost like a psychological case study. The film uses the amnesia more as an engine for the action—each clue leads to a chase or a fight. I miss the book's tension around whether Bourne might actually be a killer for hire, which the movie kind of glosses over by making him an unequivocal good guy from the get-go. The ending is totally different as well; the novel's conclusion is way more cynical and open-ended regarding his relationship with Marie.
