Christmas here I come.

It morphed into anxiety, fear, self-doubt, and countless sleepless nights. I looked at my cold, swollen fingers, then slowly asked, "Ivano, did you have a happy Christmas?" Caught off guard by my response, the other end of the line went quiet. All the lectures he'd planned were suddenly stuck in his throat. Smiling, I said softly, "I had a happy Christmas too because I discovered a secret. The comment I wrote wasn't meant to mock you. I genuinely wish all of you well." Without hesitation, I hung up.

The downtown area was similar to a lot of the towns Dak had visited recently, looking for the perfect place to start his new endeavor, but there was something slightly different about Christmas Falls, something special he couldn’t quite put his finger on. The Christmas decorations hanging from the lamp posts and strung around the trees were the same white lights, red bows, garland, and cartoony characters as everywhere else, seasonal flowers blooming from the flower beds while banners announced where he was and that he was welcome there, but an excitement seemed to hang in the air that he could only describe as a certain kind of Christmas magic he couldn’t ever remember encountering before.

Courtney looked nervous and Mason was absolutely beaming. Groaning, “Come one Mason! Not right now!” Jaxson said, rolling his eyes. He put his hand on his desk and rested his chin on his fingers with one finger on his cheek. “Not right now? What do you want, Mason?” I was so confused. What is not right now?” “Well, we missed Christmas with everything that has been going on and since I found some Christmas spirit, we should have our own little family Christmas here!” I blinked a few times at him, “We are wolves.” I stated the obvious like we don’t celebrate a holiday that human’s believe in. The Moon Goddess created us.

“Apparently, I can’t leave my restaurant unattended without chaos breaking loose.” He chuckled. “That’s because you run a tight ship.” She softened. “Maybe. But I don’t regret it. I’m glad we came home for Christmas. I needed that time.” “Me too!” Laya chimed in before yawning so wide her eyes watered. “Best Christmas ever.” She rubbed her face. “Daddy, can you tell me a bedtime story again tonight? Their unspoken desires, like shimmering stars in the winter sky, danced in silent harmony, carrying the promise of reunion and the timeless enchantment of the season. As Asmo found himself amidst the vibrant tapestry of Christmas cheer, a whimsical thought took root in his mind, unfurling like a mischievous wisp of laughter in the midst of his introspection. Pondering the age-old enigma of Father Christmas, he found himself ensnared in a labyrinth of bemusement, his brow furrowed in mock solemnity as he contemplated the veracity of the jolly old figure who traversed the world in a single night.

He felt a sense of anticipation as he prepared to share their winter legend. “Thank you all for joining us today,” he began, his voice carrying across the crowd. “We’re excited to share the story of the winter spirit and the hidden pond. This legend was inspired by our love for the Whispering Woods and the importance of kindness.” As he read, the audience listened intently, captivated by the tale of the winter spirit who granted wishes to those with pure hearts. Jace felt the magic of the story enveloping them, and he could see the wonder in the eyes of the children.

Her little fingers traced circles on the cold glass. “Because he knocked on my window last year.” My entire skeleton froze. “What?” She nodded, hugging her reindeer tighter. “He asked me if I wanted a Christmas surprise. He said all I had to do was let him in.” “Tell me you didn’t.” “I didn’t… but he said he’d come back.” Oh, fantastic. Wonderful. Great. A cheerful holiday tradition of traumatizing children. I knelt down. “Ivy… you should’ve told someone.”
