The note, however, I slipped quietly into my drawer, close enough to reach for when the chaos threatened to overwhelm me.
After working hours, Jade insisted on helping me carry the flowers home. The staff met us at the entrance and whisked them inside, but Jade followed me upstairs, refusing to simply leave them in a corner.
Minutes later, she returned with a large crystal jar. I watched as she carefully separated the bouquet, trimming the leaves with surgical precision. She filled the jar with water, added a pinch of baking soda, and squeezed in fresh lemon juice.
“This way,” she said matter-of-factly, “the flowers will last nearly two weeks.”
