I loved Daemon. The slight look of disappointment crossed over his face. “I know that. I know you came here with the Demon Overlord. But soulmates are different from mates. Mates are two people destined to be life partners, sharing a committed bond. But soulmates are more complex than that. I smiled softly at him. He stared into my eyes once more as if trying to look into my soul before beginning. "Fated is short for fated mates, and I believe they're known as soul mates or twin flames in the human world. A fated mate is someone who is your perfect match; your fated was created to mold perfectly to you, two halves to a whole. In our case, however, it's a four to one ratio. You were created for us, and we were created for you."

But she had much bigger concern. “I don’t know doctor, this all seems unreal. He is so young. What if the boy hurts him? And what about the sexual aspect? It’s just that ..” Cooney chuckled, “I don’t know why, but soulmates does not only entail sexual attraction. Soulmates are so much more than that. Usually when soulmates find each other at such a young age, they play together and with other children like normal kids. They just bond better, know each other better. I sighed. “What does that even mean? Those two boys you sent as her guards have explained what mates are. But I want to hear it from you,” he questioned, folding his arms. “Mates is just short for soulmates. Even humans understand what a soulmate is. Aurelia is my soulmate. She is the only person that can ever and will ever complete me and vice versa. No other woman will ever compare to her,” I explained.

Beaded sweat was along his forehead. “Excuse me. We’ll meet again.” I was stunned for a moment when Mr. Xalvador practically ran out the door taking that sweet manly scent with him. There was pure silence for about a minute until it was broken by Ryan. “Mates are the souls of two individuals combining… They are what you call soulmates. When two mates find each other there is no separating them…”

He tucks a tendril of hair behind my ear, then leans in to whisper, "Baby, I get your point. I just don't like your point. I mean, I hate space. Fuck space! What the fuck is space even when we have a love like ours? Strong like ours? A connection like ours? You might have a boyfriend but your soul and mine, they are connected... You know what that makes us? " he bites my neck gently. "Soulmates."

I gulped and continued, "The problem must be something else." His face straightened and he looked at me in silence for a while before he stated in an even, steady voice. "A tear in the mate bond is like a spear digging into your wolf which eventually will rip your souls apart." His two hands encircled his teacup. "That is why it is called unfortunate soulmates. Honey, this is not something to take lightly." My breath hitched. My throat felt raw and tears stung behind my eyes. "Then how would rejection be an answer?"

"It's very rare, so rare that for a long time, we thought perhaps it was only a nice story. But Liam has done more research, and we can all sense it in you. It's true. "In most marriages, wolf or human, the people love each other very much but are not what we would call 'true soulmates' - not everyone has a soulmate, you see. Even between wolves, soulmates are rare. "Emmett and I are not soulmates, for example. Not in the literal sense. That’s a mate.” I blinked. “So… a soulmate?” She shook her head. “No darling, soulmate is soft. Cute. Romantic. Mate is… violent destiny. Mate is permanent. Mate is stick-to-you-like-glue energy. Mate is ‘if you die, I die’ nonsense. Mate is a cosmic marriage contract signed with magical blood and no human consent form.” I stared at her. She stared back. “That sounds like kidnapping with extra toppings,” I said. “Welcome to the supernatural world,” she replied.
