Aurelia Nightbane gripped her phone tighter, staring at the screen as her mother's voice echoed in her ear. 'Mom, what do you mean your boyfriend will pick me up?' she asked, her voice laced with disbelief. The line crackled slightly, but Selene's tone was firm, unyielding as always.

A moment later, my eyes opened as something dawned on me. "Hey mom?" "What honey?" she asked sleepily. "What about Karen?" "Oh." Mom shrugged. "Well we weren't that serious, just friends with benefits mainly." She sighed then laughed softly, "Maybe I'll keep her around though." "What do you mean? I asked. "Well you never know," Mom giggled again. "I might get a craving."

I ask defiantly, and by my uncle's expression, I know he's dying to give me a good smack for being so stubborn. "At this very moment, you move your butt and go apologize to your mother. I'm about to tell him that this woman is not my mother when he raises his hand, making a gesture for me to be quiet. "Of course, she is your mother. Even though she didn't give you life, she is your mother. Tell me, who has been taking care of you every time you get sick? Who attends all your school events? I was in the garden, kneeling against the floor as I watered the hibiscus, a smile making its way to my lips as I hummed. My mother’s favorite flowers was hibiscus, I remember my father getting her lots of it whenever he could and now, watering the same flowers only brought me nothing but joy. I tucked a strand of hair that fell to my forehead behind my ear, wiping my face with my other hand, leaning back lightly to admire the work I just did.

Aunty said making mom scoff. "What people like us huh? What is different between you and me?! We eat the same food, we drink the same water, we live in the same house, we have the same family members then what is so different HUH!?" Mom asked making her laugh as I chuckled seeing her offended. "Sorry, sorry I forgot we are friends." Aunty said as mom walked away. "People forget friendships in a month wahh!!" She said and got back to work whereas aunty went and started coaxing her and mom played her game perfectly.

Mom loved the way these two people made me happy. We don’t expect big things; these small moments we live with our friends and family will be our lifetime memory. Olivia and Ivy grabbed my hand as we went into my room. “I am leaving, Al,” mom called before leaving. I ran down and hugged her. “Thank you, mom, for everything you have done for Cassie and me.” A mother knows everything even when you don’t say it. “And thank you for allowing me to go with my friends.”

To be honest all the local restaurants look beautiful with menus I can't wait to try but you know, I am here for a couple of weeks so I have time to visit a different one each night. It was wonderful to speak to my mom and a part of me misses her, she is my best friend too. She has guided me so well through my years into being a young adult and when Mark decided to split up with me, mom was there with her arms open wide. Dad too. He told me he never really liked Mark much. Honestly, I think all dads around the world will say that to their little girls though, you know just to make them feel better. Which of course it did.
