I felt like an ornament left forgotten in a corner, silently moving through this golden, dazzling cage. In the mornings, I woke on that excessively large bed, the space beside me cold and untouched. Outside the enormous floor-to-ceiling windows lay perfectly manicured gardens, but I had no desire to look. The servants delivered breakfast on time, plated like works of art, yet they never spoke more than necessary. They would bow slightly and leave, eyes downcast, though I sensed subtle disdain and scrutiny beneath the courtesy. They called me “Miss Lane,” not “Mrs.”

I swallowed hard flickering my eyes to the maids in the room. “Don't worry about them,” she laughed. “The maids work for me, between you and I, they know the number of men that I have fucked than I do.” “My queen, what can a servant like myself do for you?” I asked. “I heard that you were a servant at your pack before you became a warrior, they still never gave you the respect you needed.” “Well, my queen, that is the warrior's life.” “You defeated Ravok, you made their Kingdom proud, and every corner of this palace is filled with Thomas and Georgina's name…” She gets up turning her back to me.

Mia had said along the line. "The King eats from only one woman?" Isabelle was tempted to ask, but just held the question in her mind. When they were done from the kitchen, Mia showed her round the other places of the palace that needed to be worked on. She showed her to the laundry, the garden, training center and so many other places. Isabelle never uttered a word as all she did was watch and try her best to register them in her mind. She had to accept the fact that she was now a maid. Besides, it wasn't like she'd ever lived a better life before.

As she made her way to the center of the room, she scanned the faces of the maids, trying to assert her authority over them. “Good evening, ladies,” Raquel said in a sweet tone that contrasted her fierce and confident aura. “I am Raquel, and as you all know, I am to be the queen of this palace. I am sure you all understand what this means.” The maids were silent, their eyes downcast, unsure of what to say. I watched from the corner of the room, my heart pounding in my chest. I knew what was coming next.

Blushing mortifyingly, she told the maid she shouldn't have gone through such stress. The maid only blushed prettily and waved her worries away. And proceeded to tell her enthusiastically about how they, the palace servants, were extremely happy about the royal witch competitions, and the palace being full, and about having a lot of bets to place, and about the coming princess choosing, and so much more. By the time they had finished chattering, or rather Marah--as she had discovered the maids name to be, it was night already. Marah excused herself and went to run a bath for her, when she came back, Dea protested to being helped strip down, insisting she could do it on her own. Marah nodded
