Heavy with shit we weren’t saying. I cleared my throat. “Alright. That’s enough depressing hospital talk. You know what would really make my day better?” He glanced at me, brows raised. “A really dumb joke.” Andrew blinked. Then tilted his head a little, lips twitching like he was fighting a smile. “A dumb joke?” I nodded, lips curving around the cigarette still hanging from my mouth. “Come on. Hit me.” He gave me a look—half skeptical, half amused. “Fine. What do you call a sad strawberry?”

I bore with it for a few days. But it was dragging for more than a week. Now with everyone looking so depressed, it was slowly getting to me and I couldn't have that. So, me being me, I tried, I mean really tried to lighten up the mood. I tried making jokes just about anything, which didn't work. So, I tried making smart jokes, stupid jokes, sophisticated jokes, adult jokes, kids joke and what not. I wasn't even replied with a smile. Not even a tight smile. Nope.

I say softly. He chuckles genuinely. That’s the reaction I was hoping for. He looks pleased. “You think I’m hot?” He asks comically. His voice sounds raspy. I laugh lowly. “I mean..you’re alright.” I say jokingly. He smiles brightly and sits up on the bed. I sit up too. “I’m sorry.” I say again. I didn’t mean to get him all depressed. I have been depressed for a very long time and I don’t want anyone feeling that kind of darkness.

I shook my head and went to sit across Audrey. She was laughing at the quotes on the wall. “These are hilarious,” she said, reading one aloud: ‘I don’t need you to brag about me, I just don’t want you to deny me in front of people. – FART!’ Her laughter burst out, filling the café. I just stared, completely captivated. Every laugh, every sparkle in her eyes, it was contagious. “Here’s another one!” she giggled. ‘What a life! Sometimes I have mixed feelings and I get depressed on some days, and then the depression goes on other days. Yesterday morning, after I had breakfast and once there was a mad man as I classified them all, I was eating and making funny faces, while some patients were laughing, I was irritated by the man's actions, and I swore I gave the man a very bad glare, which made him comport himself, and I entered the depression state again.
